Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Gold Coast, Coolangatta, Cleveland, Beaudesert, Jimboomba and Mount Tamborine. Severe Thunderstorm Warning for LARGE HAILSTONES and DAMAGING WINDS Issued at 6:41 pm Saturday, 18 May 2024. Emergency services advise people to: * Park your car undercover away from trees. * Close doors and windows. * Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks. * Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out. * Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost. * Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous. * Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area. * Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed. The next warning is due to be issued by 9:45 pm. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and emergency services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 6:40 pm, severe thunderstorms likely to produce large hailstones and damaging winds were detected near Cleveland, Peel Island and Rathdowney. These thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast. They are forecast to affect southern waters of Moreton Bay, Amity Point and northern parts of North Stradbroke Island by 7:10 pm and Point Lookout, the area south of Canungra and waters off North Stradbroke Island by 7:40 pm.
